![]() ![]() The Indo-Pak subcontinent remained a British colony from 1849–1947. “Pakistan means not only freedom and independence but also the preserved Muslim ideology which has come to us as a precious gift and treasure and which we hope others will share with us. The main ceremony takes place in Islamabad, where the national flag is hoisted on the presidential and parliament buildings, followed by the national anthem and live televised speeches by leaders. In the Islamic calendar, Independence Day coincided with Ramadan 27, the eve of which is considered sacred by Muslims. The event was triggered by the Indian Independence Act of 1947, in which the British Indian Empire gave independence to the Dominion of Pakistan (later the Islamic Republic of Pakistan), which included West Pakistan (present-day Pakistan) and East Pakistan (now Bangladesh).
